New smooth ride over Narrabeen Lagoon

Ten-year-old Narrabeen local, Cameron Taylor, has given the new overwater boardwalk on the northern foreshore of Narrabeen Lagoon the official thumbs up this week as the section was opened to the public.

Cameron joined Zachary and Lacey Allan and Molly Kirkham from Narrabeen North Public to road test the new boardwalk just before the fences came down.

“This section is so nice and smooth to ride on,” Cameron said. “It was a great idea to build it – it’s so cool.”

Built with marine-grade hardwood and non-corrosive materials, which blend in with the natural environment and protect it from the saline conditions, the boardwalk replaces the very narrow section of the trail that ran alongside the busy Wakehurst Parkway. This ensures a safer route for cyclists, joggers and walkers while protecting the lagoon’s shoreline biodiversity.

The 8.6km Lagoon trail is enjoyed by around 4000 locals and visitors every day. Council has invested almost $2 million on the new boardwalk that runs across a section of the Lagoon near Bilarong Reserve. The State Government also provided $300,000 in addition to Council’s investment.

The section of the trail that the new overwater boardwalk replaced will be closed and replanted to re-establish a habitat corridor along the northern foreshore of the lagoon.
