Aussie flavour spreads Christmas cheer

Help make someone a “happy little Vegemite” this Christmas.

It’s Australia’s quintessential spread, and Cairns residents can now make a donation of Vegemite to help spread the festive spirit.

New initiatives to bolster the annual Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal were launched this morning (Friday 15 November) by Mayor Bob Manning and Piccone’s director and long-time supporter John Piccone.

For the first time, the appeal will be accepting donations of Vegemite jars, which will be added to each hamper for a traditional Aussie flavour.

Piccone’s IGA has pledged their support with an “Add a $1 to your bill” promotion – allowing residents to make a small, but significant donation, after every shop.

“It might seem like a small gesture, but the donation of a jar of Vegemite or a dollar at the checkout can help make Christmas Day a little merrier for those who might otherwise go without,” Mayor Cr Manning said.

“We’ve set a goal of raising $70,000 again this year, which will allow us to pack and deliver 700 food hampers to local residents who are in need of some festive cheer.

“We’ve made a steady start and at the halfway mark of this year’s appeal we’ve raised $35,000, so we still have quite a way to go and every little bit helps.”

Mr Piccone said the appeal was worthwhile and encouraged locals to get behind the cause and spread the Christmas cheer.

“Local people supporting local people is what the Christmas spirit is all about,” Mr Piccone said.

Vegemite jars can be dropped at reception at Council Regional Council offices in Spence Street, as well Cairns City, Smithfield, Manunda and Earlville libraries.

Donations to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal can be made securely via Council’s website; over the counter at one of Council’s customer service offices with cash, credit card, cheque or money order; or by dropping some spare change in donation boxes located at various local businesses and at upcoming events. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
