The world’s best in radio-controlled aerobatics will fill our ‘big skies’ this month, adding to the region’s increasing offerings of world-class events and festivals.
The Asia Pacific Radio Control Aerobatic Championships will soar into the Dalby Model Aero Club from Friday, 29 November to Sunday 1 December, with thousands expected to attend from all over the Asia Pacific region.
Spokesperson for Economic Development Councillor Donna Ashurst said the event would deliver another boost to the local economy, with more than 1,000 people expected to attend the three-day event.
“The Western Downs is emerging as a premier events destination in Queensland and this event is another opportunity for our region to showcase all we have to offer,” Cr Ashurst said.
“Spectators will be treated to jaw-dropping aerobatics, with flying models with wingspans of up to 3.2 metres taking to our skies across the last weekend of November.
“Council is proud to support the event, which will enhance the region’s reputation as a tourism destination and energize local businesses.”
The Championships will see Australia’s top radio-control pilots take on competitors from the United States, Mexico, France, Italy, United Kingdom, India, Japan and New Zealand, with the current European Champion also heading to the Western Downs to compete.
Event Director Michael Hobson said the event would welcome a record number of international competitors, with the Championships set to deliver a weekend high-flying entertainment.
“Dalby was chosen for its ability to host such a large aeromodelling event, with the region offering first-rate facilities and fantastic community support,” Mr Hobson said.
“The event is split into two separate categories including precision flying and freestyle, with the freestyle event – held at 12pm on Saturday and Sunday – set to be a spectacular highlight.
“There will also be plenty of model aircraft on display and plenty of food and drink for sale, with all proceeds going to the Dalby Model Aero Club.”
The Dalby Model Aero Club is located at 743 Dalby – Cecil Plains Road, about 7.4 kilometres from the Warrego Highway / Dalby – Cecil Plains Road intersection.
