Livingstone Shire Fire Disaster Update #6: Community urged to keep out of fire-affected areas

While some residents have been able to return to their properties overnight, the community is being urged to keep away from the fire-affected areas unless it’s absolutely necessary.
The Local Disaster Management Group met this morning to discuss the current fire situation as emergency services and community agencies continue to work around the clock to help residents return safely to their properties.
LDMG Chair and Mayor Bill Ludwig emphasised the importance of the community listening to the messages of caution from emergency authorities, and not to enter those areas impacted by the devastating fires.
“It’s fantastic news that some residents were able to return to their properties yesterday afternoon with some roads re-opening, however we strongly encourage the rest of the community to avoid these areas to ensure their own safety while allowing emergency services to carry out their important duties as the fire situation continues to unfold,” Mayor Ludwig said.
“We also understand the frustration of those residents who are still unable to return home and we thank them for their patience during this troubling time, but their safety is the ultimate priority and emergency crews will continue to assess each road and its access throughout the day.
“Council would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in assisting to tackle these unprecedented fires in our region, from the emergency services to community agencies and volunteers, as well as members of the public offering assistance and donations to those impacted.”

There will be an opportunity for all affected and interested community members to attend a Community Update tonight (Tuesday 12 November 2019) at The Yeppoon Town Hall at 6.30pm.
The Department of Communities Community Recovery Hub is now open seven days a week from 9.00am – 5.00pm, and will be working alongside Livingstone Shire Council and Emergency Service Organisations to minimise the impact and ensure the recovery of affected communities, during and after a disaster.
The Community Recovery team will be providing advice, support and/or additional resources to support the emotional, social and physical wellbeing of people affected by a disaster and assist in building resilience within the community.
