The Greater Dandenong Sustainability Awards recognise and reward the community's efforts to improve environmental sustainability.
The 2019 winners were announced at an awards night at the Dandenong Civic Centre last night.
Silverton Primary School was announced as the winner of the Sustainable Community Award.
S and G Fresh and Taylor’s Orchards with Dandenong Market won the Industry Award.
Special commendation was also given to Athol Road Primary School for being the longest running applicant and to Pianos Recycled for the work they do in restoring and recycling pre-loved pianos.
The event showcased and celebrated the dedication and creativity of the Greater Dandenong community and their role in creating a more sustainable Greater Dandenong.

Sustainable Community Award Winner - Silverton Primary SchoolGrade 5 and 6 students at Silverton Primary School have been reviewing the school’s electricity bills to monitor energy use and reduce overall energy consumption. Through their participation in the Resource Smart Program students identified energy and waste reduction as their priorities. Students came up with a list of actions to reduce the school’s overall energy use and set a reduction target of 5 per cent in a year. From 2017-18 the school reduced energy use by 6.4 per cent, exceeding their target. In addition to this Silverton Primary School also hosted a Kids Teaching Kids Conference, inviting students from other school to present workshops on environmental issues. In 2017 they created a workshop focusing on climate change. Through this workshop students have advocated to politicians for better climate change policies.
Industry Category Award Winner - S and G Fresh and Taylor’s Orchards with Dandenong MarketS and G Fresh and Taylors Orchard are independent fresh produce traders at the Dandenong Market. Abdul Ghani and Gary Taylor work tirelessly to provide fresh produce to the Greater Dandenong community and both traders supply odd shaped or surplus stock to OzHarvest to help feed members of the community in need. In just six months the traders provided almost 11.5 tonnes of unsold produce which would have otherwise been destined for landfill. This quantity of saved produce is equivalent to 34,353 meals provided to people in need.
In addition, S and G Fresh donates produce to AMES in Dandenong who provides support for refugees and new immigrants.
