Show respect, take responsibility and relax. This is the message for school leavers arriving in the Byron Shire for Schoolies Week this Friday (22 November) until 1 December.
“We hope everyone who comes has an amazing time celebrating the end of high school and has chosen Byron to chill out and relax with friends,” Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson said.
“Please act with respect and responsibility - respect for yourself, your friends and others, and our town, residents and businesses as well,” he said.
The Schoolies Safety Response is a joint initiative of BUDDI Byron Inc, Police and Byron Shire Council and features the ‘Schoolies Hub’ which will again be set up at Apex Park, run by local residents and volunteers.
The Hub is a free service where teenagers can drop in, have a break and take some time out or grab something to eat.
“Providing an opportunity to connect with someone one-on-one and having a positive presence in Apex Park really makes a difference to the whole community’s experience of Schoolies Week and we thank everyone involved in this important initiative,” Mayor Richardson said.
The Red Frogs volunteers will also be in Apex Park, offering support and facilitating referrals to appropriate services.
First Aid officers will be on hand and there will be an increased Police presence to respond to the extra visitors in town. All teenagers are reminded to bring their medication and to be aware that the region has been affected by bush fires and is experiencing smoky conditions.
