Passing of former Mayor Warren Colless

Alderman Colless was elected to Council in 1974 and by year’s end was Deputy Mayor and chairman of all committees, including the finance and the development committees. In 1976 he was elected as Mayor for the year 1977-78.

Some of council's achievements while he was Mayor included the opening of two childcare centres, the introduction of Council-run immunisation clinics, and early planning works for the construction of the Fairfield bus interchange.

Alderman Colless did not stand for re-election in 1980 due to ill health and a desire to embark on a career change.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone expressed his sadness at the former Mayor’s passing.

“Former Mayor Warren Colless served this Council with dedication and integrity for six years, in which he had a hand in a number of landmark Council initiatives,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Some of these initiatives, including the bus interchange, stand today as a testament to his foresight and leadership.

“Council’s deepest condolences go to Warren’s wife Beverley and his two daughters Tracey and Trudy. I pay his wife and family my deepest respects and condolences on this sad occasion.”
