Parking in the newly opened Creswick Road car park will be free until January 31 as part of the City of Ballarat’s Smarter Parking Stage 2 roll-out.
The boom gates will be fixed in the open position for this to occur.
The 300-space Creswick Road carpark replaces 275 spaces at the Ballarat GovHub construction site and within walking distance to the Ballarat Railway Station and the Ballarat Library.
The car park, which opened on 8 November, was funded by the Victorian Government as part of the City of Ballarat’s plan for another 1000 car parks in the Ballarat.
City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Ben Taylor said it was decided to make the car park free until January 31 to encourage people to use it more regularly.
“Once people realise how easy it is to park there and quickly get to the Ballarat Railway Station or the central Ballarat Library then we think it will get more car movement through the car park,” Cr Taylor said.
The Smarter Parking Plan Phase 2 roll out will begin on December 1, with current CBD parking meters starting to be removed and new infrastructure installed.
Parking meters that take coins and credit cards, along with a Smartphone app, will switch on in February 2020.
Clearly marked number plate recognition vehicles will start operating across the municipality in December.
While the roll out takes place, CBD on-street parking will be free from December 1 to January 31, although time limits will still apply.
