Ballarat (City) 21 Nov 2019

Buninyong residents are invited to upcoming information sessions about proposed works at one of the village’s best loved community spaces.

The proposed works would see the reinforcement of the dam wall at The Gong, Buninyong Botanic Gardens, which runs underneath a section of Cornish Street at the lake’s western edge.

The City of Ballarat will host two community information sessions and site visits on Thursday 28 November 2019.

The information sessions and site visits will be held from 1.30pm to 3pm and 5.30pm to 7pm, each beginning with a presentation on the proposed works at Buninyong Bowling Club, 708 Inglis Street Buninyong followed by a site visit to the Gardens and an opportunity for participants to ask questions and provide feedback.

The plans will also be available online at the City of Ballarat’s mySay website and on display at Buninyong Town Hall until Friday 20 December.

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Ben Taylor said the information sessions would give residents the chance to hear about the proposed project in detail and provide feedback.

“The Gong is at the heart of the Buninyong Botanic Gardens. The proposed works will reinforce the western wall of The Gong ensuring it will be there for our community and visitors to Buninyong to enjoy for many years to come.”

The project has been developed following an engineering assessment of the wall carried out in earlier this year after seepage was observed downstream of The Gong.

The assessment found that strengthening and stabilising works were needed to stop the seepage and ensure the wall remained strong in the long term.

The proposed work consists of construction of a filter layer, raising the western wall by 500mm, the construction of rock embankment upstream of the wall and an upgrade of the outlet of the dam.

Following community consultation, the works are expected to be undertaken in 2020.
