Construction has begun on Stage two of the Cape Leeuwin Trail, with the trail extending from Augusta Boat Harbour to Dead Finish.
Once completed, the dual use trail will enable walkers and cyclists to enjoy views along the 2.5km coastal trail from Flinders Bay to Dead Finish.
Future stages will see the completion of this trail and the long awaited connection of the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse to town.
Shire of Augusta Margaret River Coordinator Environment and Landcare Services, John McKinney said careful measures are in place to protect the habitat along the new trail section.
“Residents and tourists alike might have noticed activity along the coast between the Augusta Boat Harbour and Dead Finish over the last two weeks.
“The contractors developing this trail are aware of the environmentally sensitive nature of the area they are working in.
“They have been cutting the trail by hand, and flora and fauna specialists have been involved in the process from design through to construction to ensure minimal impact to Western Ringtail Possum habitat and sensitive dune vegetation,” he said.
Detailed consultation with the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions and environmental consultants is underway to determine alignment options for future stages to develop a world class trail that respects and protects the environmental values, whilst providing a high quality and safe user experience.
Stage two is scheduled for completion in January 2020.
