Situation

The Gospers Mountain fire is approximately 188,500 hectares in size and continues to burn in the Wollemi, Yengo National Parks and the Parr State Recreation Area. The fire is burning to the North of Colo Heights, South of Putty, East of Glen Davis and West of the Wollombi Rd (near St Albans) in the Lithgow, Hawkesbury and Singleton Local Government Areas and is being controlled.

Since Friday we have experienced various volumes of rainfall across the fire ground. Whilst this has eased conditions over the weekend, it has not reduced the longer term risks associated with the fire.

Showers associated with thunderstorms are forecast for today and tomorrow with warmer, drier conditions expected for Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Weekend thunderstorm activity resulted in new fires, most of which have now been brought under control after remote area firefighters were inserted into the fire ground. Air observers will continue to monitor the area for new ignitions and crews will continue to work on uncontained fires caused by lightning.

Where possible firefighters will continue to take advantage of more favourable conditions and directly attack the western edge of the fire as it backs down the escarpment.

Advice

People with respiratory conditions who are affected by bush fire smoke should implement their health management plan and seek medical advice if necessary. Take precautions, such as staying indoors and closing windows. Newnes campground, Wollemi National Park remains closed due to current fire activity.
