Published on 26 November 2019

Residents are urged to be on the alert for measles after two cases of the infectious disease were discovered in Mildura.

People may have been exposed to the disease while visiting Mildura Central Shopping Centre on Sunday 17 November 2019, between 1pm and 4.30pm, and on Tuesday 19 November 2019, between 6pm and 9pm.

Measles is extremely contagious, with symptoms usually occurring 10 to 12 days after infection.

Signs and symptoms of the measles may include a fever, runny nose, dry cough, sore and red eyes, red and bluish spots inside the mouth, a red and blotchy skin rash that appears first on the face and hairline, and then spreads to the body.

In some cases measles can cause serious, sometimes fatal, complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.

People who are at increased risk of potentially fatal measles complications include anyone with a chronic illness, children younger than five-years-old and adults.

Measles is a vaccine preventable disease, if you are unsure whether you are vaccinated please check your immunisation status.
