Roadside slashing to continue following wet weather

The first round of road side slashing across Corangamite Shire has been completed.

Council’s Works and Services Team has started the second circuit of the Shire, starting in the North and moving southward, Manager Works Mikayla Hein said.

“We have two slashers on the road full-time and made good time on our first round.  We are getting around the network in about three weeks.

“The first round is a two-metre cut on roadsides but typically does not include intersections early in the season because they are usually too wet.

“Because of late rain in spring, some are still too wet to work on safely, but we will still have the second round completed by December as well as our strategic fire breaks and township fire prevention cuts.”

Progress is on track with last year, despite the wet conditions.

“Given the recent rainfall, we anticipate growth once the weather fines up so expect we will do a third round after Christmas. 

“This will include all intersections which should have dried out by then.”

Ms Hein said all appropriate safety measures would be taken as the weather warms and vegetation dries out.

“We are mindful of conditions and will ensure we have resources, water carts etc, as necessary to deliver the works.

Council has engaged contractors to focus on additional areas, such as slashing the shoulders and drains on roadsides that have been sprayed for weeds. 

Township and Council fire prevention/hazard removal slashing works started this week.
