Tom Murray Park in Mt Sheridan is to be transformed to support the growing junior and women’s AFL competitions in the southern corridor in a plan put forward by South Cairns Cutters AFL Club and AFL Cairns.
Council has previously allocated $350,000 to improve car parking and vehicle access, and $100,000 to construct a new toilet block at the park.
To leverage these projects, AFL Cairns is seeking state funding to create a training field for women’s and junior competitions and construct change rooms at the park.
Further funding is sought to upgrade lighting at Fretwell Park, the club’s home ground.
The upgrades to both venues are estimated to cost $1.7 million.
AFL Cairns will also make a financial contribution towards the works.
Under the proposal, Tom Murray Park will remain open for public use (not fenced) and the toilet facilities will be available to other clubs and park users.
