Running of the very popular Palm Cove community market will pass to the Rotary Club of Sunrise Cairns in April next year for a one year trial, as part of a broader review of Council-facilitated markets in the region.
The market review, in 2018, suggested various changes to Council-run markets including:
Seeking a not-for-profit organisation to run the Palm Cove markets (completed)Changes to the Tanks Markets to bring all stallholders into the Tanks precinct rather than some in Flecker Gardens (completed)Discontinuing the Cruise Liner Markets (completed)Changes to the location, promotion and experience of the Esplanade Markets (ongoing)Council also today approved the handover of the Gordonvale markets to the Gordonvale Scout Group.
The former organiser, the Cancer Council, is unable to continue running the markets and has been actively working with the scout group to ensure a smooth transition.
Under the agreements, funds generated by both the Palm Cove and Gordonvale markets must be used for community activities or infrastructure in the immediate area.
