Situation
The Gospers Mountain fire is approximately 190,000 hectares in size and continues to burn in the Wollemi and Yengo National Parks and the Parr State Recreation Area. The fire is burning to the North of Colo Heights, South of Putty, East of Glen Davis and West of the Wollombi Rd (near St Albans) in the Lithgow, Hawkesbury and Singleton Local Government Areas and is being controlled.
Isolated rainfall impacted some areas of the fire ground over the past few days which improved short term conditions and allowed firefighters to undertake direct attack on some parts of the fire, such as areas around the base of the western escarpment. Lightning that accompanied the rain has caused several new ignitions which were detected on the western edge of the fire near Newnes and to the north near Muswellbrook. Numerous new fires have also been detected to the east of the Macdonald River, after a passage of lightning moved through that area. The new fire caused by lightning near Newnes has been brought under control.
Areas along the southern perimeter of the fire, which were relatively benign after the rain fall are drying out and there is an increase in hot spots. We anticipate that more hot spots will be detected as we move into a period of warmer weather. Firefighters are monitoring the area closely with the assistance of aircraft. Ground crews, supported by water bombing aircraft will continue to work in this area.
People in the area of Glen Davis and Glen Alice should expect to experience an increase in smoke due to east/ north winds over the next day.
Advice
People with respiratory conditions who are affected by bush fire smoke should implement their health management plan and seek medical advice if necessary.
