Portland and Wallerawang Skateparks were officially opened by the Mayor and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole on Saturday 23 November in front of a big crowd of skaters.

The official openings were held in front of a crowd of many skaters and their families who came to enjoy their new skatepark and to participate in a skating skills demonstration by Totem Skate Boarding.

“It was great to see such a large group of skaters, scooter riders and BMX riders at these events which tells me that Council got it right in the planning and construction of these two skate parks.   I was really impressed by the large turn up and the skills of the young people from little kids up to young adult,” said the Mayor Ray Thompson.

“I pay tribute to our local member of Parliament Paul Toole who was able to help secure $200,000 grant funding for each skatepark. Council contributed a further $100,000 plus per skatepark which has meant that the communities of Portland and Wallerawang now have state of the art skating facilities

“The two skateparks have different designs which has helped to create a ‘skate park circuit’ with Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang all offering different challenges and equipment to suit an array of abilities and interests,” said Kristy Lenon, Council’s Community Development Officer. “The official openings were a great opportunity to learn new skills from Totem and for the community to come together. Portland Central School and Wallerawang Men’s shed provided sausage sizzles, Carnivale Circus Troupe entertained the crowds and a shuttle bus ran between all three skateparks to make sure everyone got a chance to be there.”
