Public invited to Christmas tree light up this Sunday

Families from across Ararat Rural City are invited to come along and watch the municipality’s 9m-tall Christmas tree light up for the very first time this Sunday night.
Ararat Rural City Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said the Council will be installing the new tree in the next few days.
Dr Harrison the tree will be located on the corner of Vincent and High Street, a very prominent location that sees 6000 vehicles pass each day. The Salvation Army is delighted about the reinstatement of the tree in the corner of their property.
“Although it was well before my time, I understand there used to be a large Christmas tree installed every year in the same spot, so this year Council decided to reinstate the tradition with a new tree,” he said.
“We know the community misses the big tree at Christmas every year, so we hope the new tree will bring a lot of joy to everyone, young and old alike.”
Dr Harrison said the new tree is 9.2m tall and weighs 112kg. It features integrated LED lighting that twinkles and has a low impact on the environment. The star atop the tree is around 1m in height.
Residents are invited to come along to the Christmas tree light-up, which will be officiated by the Mayor Cr Jo Armstrong at 8.30pm on Sunday 1 December.
The light-up viewing area will be at the rear of the Ararat Town Hall and people are requested to park in Barkly Street and walk to the viewing area. Due to the busy intersection, all children must be supervised by an adult.
