After calling a climate emergency in July this year Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis is hosting a Climate Round Table on Wednesday 4 December, to discuss ways climate change can be addressed in our community.

Lord Mayor Vatskalis is calling on business leaders and members of the community to attend this free event.

“In declaring a state of climate emergency City of Darwin joined nearly 600 jurisdictions worldwide to recognise human induced climate change represents a real threat to our communities and the environment,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis.

“The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of an escalation in climatic issues, extreme heat events and severe drought conditions.  In Darwin we can expect an increase in the severity of cyclones and much dryer wet seasons.”

“I will be hosting the Climate Roundtable to bring together business and government leaders and members of our community to identify key priorities and immediate actions that can be taken to mitigate the impact of climate change.”

Lord Mayor’s Climate Roundtable will include two sessions - a Business Leaders Breakfast from 7.30am-10.30am followed by a Climate Change Community Roundtable from 11am-3.30pm, which is open to all interested community members. Both events are free to attend, although registration is required.

Keynote Speaker at both events is Sarah Barker, Special Counsel with Minter Ellison, who has 2 decades experience as a corporate lawyer and is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts in investment governance relating to climate change.

Both events will include a broad range of speakers and forums, with attendees asked to provide input into key actions they believe will make a real difference.
