Masonic Temple to be Transformed into New Art Gallery in Dandenong

The City of Greater Dandenong is building a new art gallery right in the heart of Dandenong.
The Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art will be built on the site of the former Masonic Temple (commonly referred to as the Masonic Hall) in Mason Street in Dandenong.
The Masonic Temple is a significant heritage structure in central Dandenong and expresses early 1900’s architecture.
It was used by members of the Freemasons until its closure in 1991.
To commemorate the heritage significance of the Masonic Temple and the contribution of Freemasonry in the City of Greater Dandenong a new interpretive sign will be installed at the site.
Greater Dandenong Council’s Community Services Director Martin Fidler said it was important to acknowledge the history of the site before the building undergoes a major refurbishment and extension in the new year.
“It’s one of Dandenong’s most recognisable heritage buildings and it will be wonderful to see it bought back to life as the Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art,” Mr Fidler said.
“The new Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art will be accessible to all.”
“It will showcase both local and touring exhibitions and artists, as well as providing a space for creative community events.” Mr Fidler said the new gallery would enhance the already vibrant and diverse arts offering in the city.
“The new gallery will host a dynamic exhibition program that speaks to diverse audiences, both locally and in the wider regions.”
Construction is planned to commence in mid-2020. The works are expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.
The new interpretive sign is part of a suite of signs recognising Greater Dandenong’s history and local narratives.
