Fairfield City Libraries boost education equity

The Launchpad tablet computers feature a simple easy-to-use interface and have pre-loaded apps for children, teens and adults. They don’t require an online connection.

Learning apps can have a powerful impact on educational development, significantly increasing mathematics and reading efficiency, yet almost 20 percent of Fairfield City households do not have access to the internet at home.

This lack of access is double the amount of Sydney as a whole.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the Launchpads give all residents, whether they are internet connected or not, access to a world of learning.

“There’s no need for internet or wi-fi to use these launch pads,” Mayor Carbone said.

“We want families to have equity in educational tools to help them get ahead in their lives. This shouldn’t be only available to those that can afford internet access.”

Residents simply turn on the pads at anytime and anywhere that suits them to learn English and maths, access stories, graphic novels as well as educational and memory games.

“Fairfield City Libraries are at the forefront of providing access to thousands of free movies, books, audiobooks, magazines, songs as well as learning apps,” Mayor Carbone said.

“If you’re not a member of our libraries, now is great time to join to take advantage of free movies, music and learning apps on the go, and all the other services on offer.”

Library membership is free and also gives members access to hundreds of free workshops and events each year.
