Work has started on a new mural that will bring colour and vibrancy to Brighton’s Railway Walk.

Bayside City Council has commissioned the artist Leans to create and install the public artwork along the rear wall of 36 Well Street.

Intended to offer a layered snapshot of the bursting colour and intricacy of the many driving forces that keep Brighton and Church Street thriving as a community, the large scale mural is part of Council’s plan to mitigate graffiti while enhancing the streetscape and local amenity.

The final design was chosen by Council in partnership with local residents, the community group ‘Friends of Railway Walk’ and Church Street traders.

The installation will take two weeks and access down Railway Walk will be limited during this time. Council apologises for the inconvenience, but the end result will be worth it.

Leans said that the concept of the mural reflected the nature of Church Street and its surrounds as well as the immense energy and excitement of the area.

“The mural is intended to offer a layered snapshot of the bursting colour and intricacy of the many driving forces that keep Brighton and Church Street thriving as a community.

“Although not literal, the piece depicts an ecosystem of patterns and contemporary imagery that invites viewers into an abstract version of the architectural and natural world around them.”
