Men’s Shed on receiving end of spirit of giving this Christmas

The big bloke in the red suit has come early for the new Men’s Shed at Claremont Showground – which will benefit from public donations at this year’s Claremont Christmas Festival to bolster a Town of Claremont grant for the group to build a new community garden, barbecue area and bicycle workshop.

The Men’s Shed will also have a ‘Santa’s wish list’ for donations being accepted at this year’s Christmas Festival, ranging from items including plants and benches to labour for tasks such as paving, to further enhance the project.

Using a grant of almost $5600 from the Town, project volunteers aim to complete stage one landscaping by Christmas and then bed down the garden by the end of summer – creating a multifunctional community space for growing vegetables and flowers, restoring bikes, and gathering together.

Mayor Jock Barker said the grant funding would be supplemented by public donations for battery-powered candles being supplied for this year’s Christmas carols with Perth Symphony Orchestra next weekend.

“Each year, Council nominates a charitable group the Town has worked with during the year as the beneficiary of donations for battery-powered candles for the carols in Claremont Park – which is expected to draw a crowd of about 2000 people next Sunday (1 December 2019),” he said.

Mayor Barker said the establishment of the new Men’s Shed at the Showground’s former farm animal kingdom pavilion had followed proposals by several western suburbs Rotary clubs in recent years. He said it was an exceptional site for a Men’s Shed, in close proximity to the railway station and high-density accommodation, and a fantastic community initiative to promote health and wellbeing among men of all ages and backgrounds.

“Council is delighted to provide support to the steering committee of six Rotary clubs – including the Bay View Claremont branch – who are driving the transformation of the pavilion into a space for community activities including woodwork, horticulture, computer training, cooking, photography, maybe even a music group,” he said.

Get into the Christmas spirit with festivities and family fun in Claremont Park from 4pm-8.30pm on 1 December, including train and camel rides, face-painting, arts and crafts, a bouncing castle, food outlets and carols from 7pm.   Back To News Stories
