City of Darwin is offering free on-street parking in the CBD for the Christmas and New Year period again this holiday season, starting on Monday 9 December and continuing over the Christmas and New Year period to 5 January 2020.

Council unanimously voted in favour of the move on 15 October, 2019.

“We want to encourage people to come into the city to shop, visit cafes and restaurants and to socialise with family and friends in the lead up to Christmas and throughout the New Year period,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

“Our City has so much to offer – a variety of shops and a so many boutique bars, cafes and restaurants.  Following the extensive work we have undertaken in the Mall recently, I’m proud to say it really is a beautiful place to visit.”

Over the past 6 months City of Darwin has installed extensive security and ambient lighting throughout the Mall and added pots of coloured flowers.

Free on-street parking was trialled for the first time in 2018 and was well received by shoppers, retailers and restaurateurs.

“Christmas can be an expensive time of year and removing the cost of on-street parking will provide a small saving back to the community.”

“Following  feedback from the free parking offer pre-Christmas 2018 we are starting the free parking initiative much earlier this year,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis.

Off-street parking is not included in the offer and time limits for parking will still be enforced.

To ensure the community can take advantage of the free on-street parking City of Darwin will be disabling parking meters so they are unable to accept coins or credit cards during this period.
