More than 160 truck owners have felt the pain of a fine, after illegally parking in the streets of Canterbury-Bankstown over the past three months.
Mayor Khal Asfour said three weekend operations have now been conducted, following complaints from residents.
“We initially targeted six suburbs - Earlwood, Campsie, Croydon Park, Lakemba, Punchbowl and Roselands - where 40 heavy vehicles were found to be parked illegally,” he said.
“We then expanded our truck parking blitz to take in 11 suburbs, with a further 44 truck owners fined.
“Now a further 82 fines have been handed out in our latest crackdown.”
Heavy vehicles were found parked on footpaths, nature strips and in no parking areas, with fines issued at:
Villawood – 31; Greenacre – 10; Campsie – 10; Punchbowl - 9; Earlwood – 7; Belmore – 4; Lakemba – 4; and Kingsgrove – 4.“Unfortunately, it appears truck owners are going to learn the hard way if they intend to continue to park illegally,” Mayor Asfour said.
“We’ve issued 166 fines in three months and we will continue these operations until truck owners start parking where they should, and not cause disruption or safety problems for residents and motorists.”
Mayor Asfour encouraged residents to continue to provide information by calling Council’s Customer Service Centre on 9707 9000.
“Our officers can’t be everywhere all the time, so it’s important residents tip us off when someone is doing the wrong thing, including trucks being parked illegally and causing safety issues,” he said.
“Truck owners are on notice. Our officers could be anywhere, any time, and be supported by local Police.”
The fine for parking a heavy vehicle for more than one hour is $114, while parking on a footpath or nature strip in a built-up area incurs a $268 penalty.
