The Theatre Royal complex in Camperdown has a hidden secret. The Corangamite Shire Council-owned complex has several other spaces that can be assets to the community and business.
Council is inviting public input to decide how to use the spaces for the good of the community.
The 1890 old Mechanics Institute Hall and adjoining buildings include:
Two adjoining shopfronts with storeroom and kitchenette Two other ground floor offices, one with a kitchenette Six upstairs offices A large gallery space behind the theatre projection room The old Camperdown stadiumThe spaces all have access to a commercial kitchen.
Corangamite Shire Council Manager Growth and Engagement Rory Neeson said potential uses could be as diverse as the community’s imagination.
“Possibilities include an art gallery, pop-up shops, media studio, office suites, or a remote education study hub,” Mr Neeson said.
“Grass roots input is vital. There’s no point having assets sitting idle, but whatever is done has to reflect what the community want and need.
“By harnessing the passion of groups and individuals, we have the opportunity to use these areas to benefit the community and bring economic advantages for the Shire.”
Council is working with innovation experts from Marketing Entourage who have touched base with community members, businesses, creatives and education providers to discuss their challenges and needs.
“Those discussions have led to some initial concepts and preliminary designs which will be put on display for the community to view,” Mr Neeson said.
“We encourage everyone to come along and have their say.
“All members of the community are encouraged to have a look at the displays in the Theatre Shop, Manifold Street, Wednesday 18 December 2019 from 4 pm to 7 pm, then stay on to enjoy the Christmas carols from 7:30 pm.”
