Council endorses updated water strategy

Council has endorsed changes to the management of the city’s water supply to better target the timing to construct additional infrastructure to meet demand.

At today’s meeting, Council approved modifications to the performance targets within the existing water supply Levels of Service framework for Cairns.

The modifications will not change existing dam levels that are used to trigger the implementation of water restrictions – they will remain the same.

The review confirmed the timing previously identified for the commissioning of the Draper Road Water Treatment Plant in 2026.

Residents are also reminded that Level 1 water restrictions are currently in place.

The main consideration of Level 1 restrictions is shorter hours for automated watering, such as sprinklers.

The use of automated watering is only permitted between 6am and 8am, and 6pm and 8pm on the following days:
