Hundreds of local families will be feeling like “happy little Vegemites” this Christmas thanks to the generosity of the Cairns community.
Christmas cheer was in full swing this morning as volunteers packed 700 food hampers for delivery to local families in need.
In a tribute to the city’s true Aussie spirit, about 300 Vegemite jars were donated to this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, which raised more than $62,000 to provide hampers to families and the elderly who might otherwise go without this Christmas.
This included $7000 raised through merchandise sales at last weekend’s Carols by Candlelight at Fogarty Park.
“The Christmas season is all about giving and this is embraced by so many wonderful people within our community,” Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said.
“This appeal very much relies on the significant donations made by local businesses and we thank you for your contributions. Indeed, we are very thankful for every donation, no matter how big or small.”
Hampers will be delivered by local charities and support agencies to families and seniors in need of a little Christmas cheer.
“For those who are doing it a little tough, the donation of a food hamper stocked with family favourites can make Christmas Day a little merrier,” Cr Manning said.
“A big thanks has to go to everyone who has put up their hands to help prepare, pack and deliver these hampers to people in our community. In particular, thanks to the members of Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise for coordinating the packing day.
“To everyone who has contributed to the appeal in any way, we thank you for generosity and wish you a very merry Christmas.”
There is still time for residents to donate to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, which is about $3000 short of this year’s $65,000 target.
Donations can be made securely via Council’s website; over the counter at one of Council’s customer service offices with cash, credit card, cheque or money order; or by dropping some spare change in donation boxes located at various local businesses and at upcoming events. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
