Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons was excited to present a design for a new regional Museum and Art Galley for the North West at last night’s Annual General Meeting.
Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “The North West Museum and Art Gallery (NWMAG) will be the premier destination in Tasmania’s extraordinary North West to be inspired and delighted, to think, study and research, to connect and create through an enriching programme of culture and creativity.
“The bringing together of our Art Gallery and Museum aims to create a world class cultural precinct, providing a leading visitor experience for the broader community and tourists to Tasmania.
“The merger of the two facilities is a key component of the Gallery and Museum Strategic Plan.
“NWMAG will be a collaboration between the Museum and Art Gallery – where stories about the whole of the North West Coast can be told through objects and art.”
It is estimated that the NWMAG will cost $18 million. Council has secured $5 million from the Federal Government and will be seeking $6.5 million in next year’s State Budget.
Stakeholder consultation will begin shortly and further details will be made available on burnie.net over the coming weeks.
