The Eureka Centre and the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park together create a powerful combination for experiencing the Eureka Stockade – one of the most influential events in Ballarat, Australian and world history.

The City of Ballarat has developed a Draft Interpretation Plan to set a new vision and guide how we interpret, share and commemorate the Eureka story, as well as enhance the values of the National Heritage listed Eureka Stockade Memorial Park – the purported site of the Eureka Stockade.

We are now seeking feedback from the Ballarat community on the Draft Interpretation Plan, which has been shaped by values and aspirations shared by the community and key stakeholders during consultation over the last 12 months. An important component of this was the strategic advice to Council from the Eureka Centre Community Advisory Committee, set out in a 2030 Vision which was developed alongside the plan. The 2030 Vision was unanimously adopted by Council on 11 December 2019.

We would like you to tell us whether the plan:

· Reflects what you feel is most important about the Eureka story and how it should be told

· Contains achievable actions that support community connection and use of the Eureka Centre and Eureka Stockade Memorial Park

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Ben Taylor said it is vital to honour the Eureka story with respect and integrity, including through creating entry points for diverse audiences, whether incoming tourists, local history buffs or school children participating in the Eureka Centre’s popular Education Program.

“Eureka is one of Ballarat’s enduring foundation stories. The bold vision for equality and justice that the miner’s stood together to defend in 1854 forged the very character of Australian democracy”, Cr Taylor said.

“We are committed to making the Eureka Centre and the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park a respected cultural attraction that draws people to Ballarat to hear this compelling story and experience one of Australia’s great destination artefacts, the Eureka Flag

“I would urge everyone with an interest in the Eureka story to share their thoughts on the draft interpretation plan.”

The survey will be open at mysay.ballarat.vic.gov.au from Thursday 12 December 2019 until Friday 14 February 2020.

There will be opportunities for community members to share their feedback in person in the new year.
