Celebrate the arts in Gannawarra in 2020

Published on 13 December 2019

A multi-generational art experience, comedic shows and a performance by a renowned Blues and Roots singer highlights Gannawarra Shire Council’s Arts and Culture program for 2020.

Council is pleased to be hosting six performances next year that will cater for all ages and interests.

Developed in partnership with community organisations, Regional Arts Victoria and Creative Victoria, the program builds on the successful growth of Council’s arts and culture program.

“As in previous years, Council’s attendance at the Showcase Victoria annual artistic showcase in May 2019 helped identify performances that will appeal to Gannawarra residents,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Performances have been spread out throughout the year and at various locations, ranging from the Leitchville Memorial Hall, Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library and a secret location.”

The 2020 Arts and Culture program begins at Kerang’s Sir John Gorton Library on Wednesday, 1 April 2020 with I See You Like This, a multi-generational artistic experience. Children will have the opportunity to use their parent or guardian’s face as a canvas to develop a unique, and often bizarre, portrait.

The talents of schoolchildren throughout the Gannawarra will be celebrated at the Kerang Memorial Hall on Friday, 1 May 2020 when the Kerang Music Society hosts Rhythm and Voice. The annual musical showcase will see children take to the stage and perform choral arrangements following a morning of workshops.

Following on from the success of performances held at the Leitchville Memorial Hall in recent years, comedian Jude Perl will take her I Have a Face show to the town on Friday, 12 June 2020. The show will use music and humour to delve deeply into mental health themes.

Audience members will experience a morning of hilarious, ridiculous fun when The Listies – the maestros of kidult comedy - bring their Rolling on the Floor Laughing So Hard show to the Cohuna Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 8 July 2020.

Blues and Roots singer, Mama Kin will bring her foot-stomping soulful voice to Kerang in October 2020 in a special performance that will coincide with a residency-based program.

The arts and culture program wraps up on Saturday, 14 November 2020 with A Migrant’s Son, a hard-hitting and hilarious account of the migration of the Greeks to Australia to be held at a secret location.

“I encourage all residents to add these events to their calendar and look out for the Arts and Culture in Gannawarra 2020 brochure when it is distributed early next year, which will detail how to book tickets for each show,” Mayor Learmonth said.

Details regarding each performance will also be available online at www.gsc.vic.gov.au/events
