Quambatook-Boort Road bridge replacement works begin 20 January 2020

Works to replace the Quambatook-Boort Road bridge with a new structure are scheduled to begin on Monday, 20 January 2020.

The bridge, which spans the Avoca River and provides a road connection between the Quambatook township and the Quambatook Recreation Reserve, will be replaced with a two-lane concrete structure that will be able to withstand higher mass limits.

It is anticipated the road will be closed for approximately eight weeks, with detours in place via Ninyeunook and Quambatook South roads.

“The replacement bridge will provide an efficient, safe and effective first and last mile transport route for producers, including reducing the number of required heavy vehicle movements and travel times, thereby meeting required freight demands to processing facilities,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Council has liaised with the Quambatook community to ensure the works have minimal impact on the community. This includes scheduling the works following the completion of harvest and prior to the start of the Golden Rivers Football Netball League season.

“The V/Line bus service that runs through Quambatook will also be diverted via Quambatook South Road, with the pick-up/drop-off point for the Boort District School bus to be temporarily located to the Quambatook Recreation Reserve whilst these works are occurring.”

Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water is assisting Council in relocating an existing pipeline that is attached to the bridge.  A new line will be installed by boring under the Avoca River, with these works being completed prior to Christmas.

“Council thanks the community for its patience as these works occur,” Mayor Learmonth said.

The Quambatook-Boort Road bridge works are funded by a $423,333 contribution from Regional Roads Victoria’s Fixing Country Roads program and are part of Council’s $10.877 million capital works program, outlined in the 2019/2020 budget.
