Council grants presentation to outstanding community projects

Published on 16 December 2019

Forty-three Council grants totalling more than $188,400 were recently presented to local groups, clubs and organisations as part of the latest round of Council’s grants program.

The program is designed to support groups with projects that benefit the wider community, from sporting groups through to whole-of-community events and projects.

Last week's recipients successfully applied for funding under Council’s Recreation Development, Recreation Facilities Upgrade, Community Project and Environmental Project grants streams.

Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence congratulated the latest round of recipients, not just for their successful applications, but the projects they’ve developed.

"Our Grants program is a great way for us to partner with community groups throughout our municipality, but it’s also a good way to highlight the amazing projects local clubs, groups and organisations have come up with,” Cr Clemence said.

“In the majority of cases these groups are run entirely by volunteers who donate countless hours of their own time, and their own resources for initiatives that ultimately benefit the broader community.”

Community Project Grants - $84,328.20

These grants are designed to provide financial assistance to local not-for-profit organisations and groups for innovative projects, or service enhancements, which target recognised high-need groups in our community and meet the goals of Council’s Community and Council Plan.

Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equality Helen Healy presented more than $84,000 in grants to 15 Community projects.

“These 15 amazing projects will make a major difference to the lives of a broad range of residents across our municipality, particularly those who may need extra support or assistance,” Cr Healy said.

“From projects that support new migrant farmers in our region, through to initiatives that provide employment or work experience opportunities for people with disabilities, all 15 projects are certainly worthy recipients.”

Recreation Grants - $84,881.73

Council’s Recreation Development Grants program provides recreation groups with the opportunity and financial assistance to undertake a broad range of small to medium projects, with funding available through two different programs – Development Grants and Facilities Upgrade Grants

Councillor for Recreation and Sport Glenn Milne presented nine recipients with Recreation Development Grants valued at $8,936 and 13 recipients with Recreation Facilities Upgrade Grants totalling $75,945.

“The numerous sport and recreation groups in our region serve a vital purpose providing facilities and activities for thousands of residents, young and old, to enjoy and benefit from,” Cr Milne said.

“In the majority of cases these groups are run entirely by volunteers, and to see the professionalism and standard of projects put forward this year is a real credit to these groups, and something our community should be thankful for.”

Environmental Project Grants - $19,218

The Environmental Project Grants program is designed to assist local, not-for-profit organisations and groups to access funding for innovative environmental projects in the Mildura Rural City Council area and meet the goals of the Community and Council Plan.

Councillor for Environment and Farming Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said six recipients received more than $19,000 in grants as part of the latest round of this program.

“Our environment is one of our most precious resources, and it’s encouraging to see the work being done by local groups to ensure it is protected,” Cr Cirillo said.

“This round’s innovative projects, also demonstrate recipients’ awareness of the need to keep pushing for more sustainable outcomes and we’re proud to partner with them.”
