Campers waste

With the peak holiday season almost here, Campaspe Shire Council is once again partnering with Parks Victoria in a bid to combat campers waste.

Regulatory and Community Services General Manager, Paul McKenzie said it is unfortunate that at this time of year, it is not uncommon to find waste left in our natural bushland and river areas from some campers.

“In an attempt to eliminate this problem, council is taking early measures by placing skips in various locations to help campers conveniently and appropriately dispose of their rubbish,” Mr McKenzie said.

Whilst bushland and river areas are the responsibility of Parks Victoria, council recognises the impact messy campers can have on local residents and visitors to the area and will be placing skips at the following locations:

“We acknowledge that most campers do the right thing, however there are some people who take no responsibility, leaving rubbish behind at their campsite or dumped it in nearby bushland.”

“As well as being unsightly and degrading of our bushland, dumped rubbish can lead to health and safety issues for people and wildlife,” Mr McKenzie said.

Skips will go out just before Christmas and will be emptied regularly. Security will also be in place and monitored closely to identify those who misuse the skips.

Campers also have the option to dispose of pre-sorted waste for free at any of the shire’s eight transfer stations. If loads are not pre-sorted, a fee will be charged.
