Recycle right and be rewarded!

Under the 12-month pilot program, education officers will undertake random inspections of household recycling bins and green garden bins when presented on the kerb for collection. Educations officers will not be entering private property.

Households will receive a silver star for correct waste separation, or an educational sticker to help improve any mistakes.

Households who receive silver stars will also go in the draw to win a supermarket voucher, with four winners drawn at the end of each month.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield said the program was a great way to increase awareness about the importance of recycling.

“With the recent changes and current vulnerability in the recycling industry, it’s more important than ever to ensure residents of Cardinia Shire are using their household bins correctly,” Cr Springfield said.

“The bin stickers provide direct feedback to encourage households to keep recycling right, as well as helping residents to identify what can and can't go into the household bins.

“Recycling reduces the demand for new resources, reduces energy and water used to make products and minimises the waste sent to landfill, so it really is vital that every household in our shire knows how to correctly dispose of their rubbish.”

The Bin Education Program is part of Cardinia Shire Council’s waste education.
