TRC approves Option 2 for Highfields Library’s external facade

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) today endorsed the popular pick, Option 2, as the preferred external façade for the new Highfields Library and Community Centre at the December Ordinary Meeting of Council. (December 17, 2019)

TRC Library and Cultural Services portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia said the sleek, modern design features of Option 2 had overwhelmingly won the public vote for the new library’s external façade.

Cr Ramia said Option 2 was the clear winner with 391 votes, or 80%, of the 490 votes cast during the public voting period in October/November this year.

“Council appreciates the interest shown by the public and thanks residents for taking the time to vote for their preferred façade design,” Cr Ramia said.

“The Option 2 façade features a floating roof and an extended awning facing the Charles and Motee Rogers Reserve.

“The awning provides a high degree of weather protection and a transition between the natural and built environments. This area will be an attractive outdoor setting for residents to enjoy.

“The new facility will be located on the north-western side of O’Brien Road in the Highfields Cultural Precinct with construction due to start in early 2020.

“Residents can look forward to using a modern, purpose-built library, customer service centre and community meeting facility that will serve current and future needs of the Highfields and surrounding communities.

“Special features will include dedicated reading spaces, including an outdoor reading area facing the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve, computer facilities and free wi-fi access.

“In addition to the construction of a new facility, the project includes upgrades to the road network and car parking in the immediate surrounds.

“Construction is scheduled to be completed by the second half of 2021, weather permitting.”

Council today also endorsed the appointment of arts and cultural organisation representatives Sally Johnson and Bronwyn Herbert, along with professional artist John Tobin, to the public art reference group.

The group also will include two Councillors and two senior TRC officers. It will explore opportunities to include public art around the Highfields Library and surrounding precinct.
