Wyndham City 13 Dec 2019

Wyndham City Council is undertaking a review of European heritage places in its municipality to identify, assess, and protect its places of heritage significance and the community is invited to be a part of the process.

Arts Culture and Heritage portfolio holder Cr Tony Hooper said Wyndham had a rich and diverse cultural heritage stretching back more than 60,000 years to the traditional owners of the land, the Wathaurong, Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation.

“Our region is home to special places and unique heritage sites, that tell the story of our City’s growth and development, including the influence of European settlement, agriculture and defence industries,” Cr Hooper said.

“Over the next two years, Wyndham City is undertaking a review of post-contact heritage, a specific period of our history from first contact between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people and we want the community to tell us what areas they believe need to be included in this review.”

“Community nominations will be assessed by an independent heritage expert and reviewed alongside existing studies and databases.”

“This will enable Council to identify, assess and protect important heritage places and objects from this particular period of our history.

“Wyndham currently has two sites on the National Heritage List, the RAAF bases in Laverton and Point Cook, and 13 sites listed on the Victorian State Heritage Register.”

“The municipality has 135 sites of local significance, including dry stone walls, homesteads, mansions, gardens, infrastructure, and homes.”

“A heritage place may be a site, area, building, group of buildings, structure, archaeological site, tree, garden, geological formation, fossil site, or other place of natural or cultural significance and its associated land.”

“Heritage objects could be furniture, shipwrecks, relics, archaeological artefacts, equipment, transport vehicles and everyday articles that contribute to an understanding of a place’s history.”
