Wyndham City Calls For Its Fair Share Of State Funds

Schools, roads, and a better public transport network top Wyndham City’s wish list in the Council’s submission to the 2020/21 Victorian Budget.

Wyndham City Mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said more than 270,000 people already called Wyndham home and its population is predicted to surpass 500,000 by 2040.

“This rapid growth requires immediate funding to improve and expand infrastructure, introduce more transport options, and enough schools for our young residents,” Cr Gilligan said.

“These projects can only be made possible with State Government funding and it is vital that they are included in the 2020/21 Budget.”

“The projects Council has outlined in this year’s submission are already overdue, and if we are to thrive in a liveable and sustainable City, we need the State Government’s financial support to grow our infrastructure along with our population increase.”

“Wyndham has the highest proportion of people in Victoria who spend two hours or more commuting to and from work.”

“Our residents consistently tell us that road congestion and poor public transport are top priorities to be fixed so we are asking the State Government to fund the remaining stages of the  Wyndham Westlink, which includes the Ison Road grade separation, the Ballan Road, Hobbs Road, and Armstrong Road intersection upgrade, the upgrade and signalisation of Point Cook/Sneydes Road and Derrimut/Boundary Road intersections, and extra Regional Railway Link stations - particularly Sayers Road station due to the growth of Tarneit.

“We are again calling for the electrification of the Wyndham Vale Rail Line and extension to the Werribee Line.”

Cr Gilligan said the delivery of new schools in Wyndham was also a top priority for Council.

“The State Government has already pledged to build 100 new schools by 2026 and we welcome Wyndham’s education needs being included in this plan.”

“Our existing need for more schools in Wyndham, coupled with our booming population, means we should receive a large portion of these new builds.”

“We need eight new schools built right away to cater for our existing population, and with the growth we are experiencing we will need many more in the next few years. We are also calling for the competition of the P-9 schools in Truganina and Point Cook.”

“Wyndham City wants to work closely with the Victorian Government to deliver real outcomes, and this is the perfect opportunity.”
