Wyndham City 12 Dec 2019

When the presents have been unwrapped, and cubby houses, bikes and trampolines assembled, where does the packaging go?

Last year Wyndham City spent $56,898 of ratepayers money collecting 503 tonnes of litter and illegally dumped items across the City.

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said last Christmas saw a record high amount of dumped rubbish, most of which could be recycled or reused.

“The simplest thing everyone can do over the festive period is to save wrapping paper for next year and put any recyclable plastic, paper and cardboard into the kerbside recycling bin,” Cr Marcus said.

“You can break down cardboard boxes and put them in the recycling bin over a period of a few weeks or bring it to the Refuse Disposal Facility for free.”

“Polystyrene cannot go in your recycling bin but can be broken down, bagged, and placed in your garbage bin.”

“If you have a large amount of the material, Unipod in Truganina can take it upon request.”

“Council offers three free hard waste collections a year, so maybe you could get rid of all of your Christmas packaging or old electronic waste in one pick up – just book online or call Council.”

“Anyone found dumping rubbish illegally can face hefty fines but we all end up paying for Council to clean up the Christmas mess through the money we pay on rates – so let’s save these dollars and put them to better use.”

“Besides the financial sting, our environment is where the real damage lies.”

“Dumped rubbish ends up in animals’ habitat and they can ingest damaging materials.”

“Rubbish pollutes our waterways and looks unsightly strewn around our neighbourhoods.”

The only days the kerbside rubbish collection will not be taken is Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. If rubbish was meant to be collected on these days, it will be collected one day later.

The refuse disposal facility will only close on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
