In the wake of the regions’ recent devastating wildfire event, Council has resolved to redistribute funding to local rural fire brigades, in recognition of the continuing support these groups provided to the community in its time of need.

Mayor Bill Ludwig said Council recently received a suggestion from a local business proposing the redistribution of funds previously allocated to the delivery of round two (2019/20) of the Livingstone Community Grants, following the recent bush fires.

“The bush fires experienced across Livingstone Shire recently have affected many areas, residents, business, and community organisations. Council is acutely aware of the impact these events have had on the local community and has considered the most appropriate response in relation to building the capacity and increasing the resilience of rural fire brigades across the community in recognition of their continuing efforts,” Mayor Ludwig said.

“Council records demonstrate there are 36 rural fire brigades across the Livingstone Shire, with the majority of these involved in the response to the recent bush fires.

“These funds will be made available through the redistribution of these budget allocations and will be divided equally across the local rural fire brigades to support the recovery phase following recent operations.

“The remaining budget allocation for the Mayor’s Discretionary Fund will also be equally redistributed to rural fire brigades throughout the Livingstone Shire.

“These local brigades were the first-responders on the ground during these unprecedented wildfires last month and every effort should be made to support them wherever possible in their recovery efforts.

“Council is extremely proud of these brigades and their members for their bravery and quick-action to protect their community from dangerous fire zones.

“Fire mitigation efforts are also underway this week in specific areas of the Shire and will continue to be carried out when weather conditions allow,” Mayor Ludwig said.
