“During the financial year, the Town facilitated the progress of three major projects – the Claremont Aquatic Centre splash pad, the Freshwater Bay Museum community facility, and redevelopment of the well-utilised McKenzie Pavilion amenities at Cresswell Park,” said Mayor Barker after the newly elected Council this week endorsed the annual report into the Town’s services, performance, governance and finances for the year.
“Due to responsible resource management and sound financial planning, we have been able to fund and implement large infrastructure works including undergrounding power in the remaining area of town,” he added. “We also welcomed confirmation of financial support from the Federal Government to ensure the splash pad and McKenzie Pavilion projects come to fruition in the following financial years.” Mayor Barker said 2018/19 had been an extremely busy year for the Council and Town administration, with “many achievements to support the development of our Town and wellbeing of our community”.
“We received an overwhelming response from ratepayers and residents to the Town’s biennial Community Perceptions survey – a critical consultation strategy to obtain meaningful feedback to guide our decision-making processes and determine areas for focus or improvement,” he said. “With clear community opinion to focus on footpath improvement, Council boosted funding to this area in 2018/19 to increase the speed in which older footpaths are replaced with new, safer concrete slabs.” Physical enhancements to the Avion Way streetscape were also made to support local businesses through improved amenity, along with support through Claremont Town Centre partnership initiatives including street festivals, a marketing campaign and dedicated social media, he said. Mayor Barker said there would be continued focus on community asset management and preservation in the year ahead. “It is imperative that we continue to maintain our built assets,” he said.
