The City of Swan has delivered a major $1.02 million upgrade to its CCTV network, largely thanks to a Federal Government grant.
The City successfully applied for the $847,000 grant provided through the Safer Communities Fund.
The upgrades include 37 additional cameras and new fibre optic cabling to provide a live feed of high quality footage to Kiara Police Station, complementing existing feeds to the Midland and Ellenbrook Police Stations.
The new cameras are installed in various locations in Midland CBD, Lockridge and Beechboro.
The City has configured the system to improve CCTV coverage of locations with high foot traffic, including parks, car parks and pathways.
The additional cameras join the City’s existing network of over 300 cameras, meaning that the City and WA Police will have access to more and better CCTV footage than before.
City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said the upgrades are designed to help make the community feel safer, and assist police to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.
“We have a responsibility to residents and local businesses to help prevent crime,” he said.
“As one of the fastest growing local government areas in the Perth metropolitan area, we are meeting the challenges that come with an increased population.”
Deputy Mayor David Lucas said the new measures are not only preventative, but they will also help WA Police to prosecute offenders and reduce their response times.
“We will continue to work closely with WA Police to make our community safer than ever,” he said.
Senator Dean Smith, Senator for Perth’s Northern Suburbs, said the $1 million boost to CCTV in the City of Swan highlights the Coalition Government and my personal dedication to delivering on our local election commitments to make Perth streets safer.
“The boost to Kiara Police Station’s CCTV network will build the capacity of local police to monitor crime and antisocial behaviour, whilst increasing response times and providing the community with greater peace of mind,” he said.
