An estimated 20,000 people celebrated the start of 2020 at Byron Bay and crowds were happy and enjoyed the entertainment in Jonson Street which was closed to traffic and renamed Soul Street.

Acting General Manager of Byron Shire Council, Phil Holloway, said Police reported that while there were some minor incidents of anti-social behaviour, generally they were very pleased with the way the night went.

“The event was very family-focused and there were a lot of people out with their children which was fantastic to see,” Mr Holloway said.

“We work hard at promoting New Year’s Eve at Byron Bay as a family-friendly, alcohol-free, celebration which is not suitable for people wanting to drink and create trouble so it is pleasing to see that the great majority of people not only heeded the message but had a fabulous time, he said.

“The First Sun event at Cape Byron Lighthouse was also a great drawcard for locals and visitors who took the opportunity to start 2020 with some meditation, yoga and mindfulness.

“I take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in New Year’s Eve celebrations in Byron Bay, including the Police, Ambulance and other Emergency Services, the Byron Community Centre which organised Soul Street, organisers of First Sun, and to our staff who did an exceptional job setting up and cleaning up afterwards,” Mr Holloway said.
