Bushfire insurance and clean-up

7 January 2020

The NSW State Government has advised that it will cover site clean-up costs for all destroyed/damaged properties – those insured and not insured. This means that insurance payments can be fully utilised for rebuilding.

Council’s General Manager, Leanne Barnes said people can take their time in assessing what is the best action for them in relation to insurance – this is one of the things we learnt from the 2018 bushfire experiences.

“Contact your insurance company and let them know you have been affected by bushfire - there is no rush to make a claim, you can take your time,” Ms Barnes said.

Once damaged areas are deemed safe, insurance assessors will be able to enter to begin their assessments.

The Insurance Council of Australia is a useful resource, providing advice and answers to questions.

Legal Aid New South Wales is also available for support and advice. The LawAccess NSW Disaster Response Hotline is 1800 801 529 and can help with a range of issues including insurance claims and tenancy.

“Both these organisations were very supportive during the 2018 bushfires when they worked with our community to ensure the best outcome for those affected during such a devastating time,” Ms Barnes said.
