The Millmerran Aquatic Centre will make a splash this year, with Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) undertaking a significant upgrade of the facility.

TRC Environment and Community Committee Chair Councillor Geoff McDonald said $300,000 had been allocated in the 2019/20 Budget to begin work on the facility.

“The aquatic centres throughout our Region are so important to our residents,” Cr McDonald said.

“During the summer our pools are extremely popular, attracting large crowds daily, and it’s important we continue to provide adequate facilities to meet the needs of our community.

“This upgrade has been on our capital works program for a while now however, we’ve noticed there are some issues with the pool so it’s important we take swift action to address this matter.

“The pool is about 60 years old and as a result there are issues with the concrete’s structural integrity.

“Council has made a decision to fast track this program of works to address the issues as soon as possible.

“Upgrades for the Millmerran Aquatic Centre include: pool shell, wet deck, ramp for people with disabilities, filtration and change room upgrades.

“Originally these upgrades were planned to occur over a four year period but we’re now aiming to do everything in one program of work.

“This will result in a full closure of the facility and by undertaking the project this way we’ll be able to ensure the closure has minimal impact.

“In the lead up to the renovations taking place, and throughout the entire process, we will continue having conversations with the leasee of the facility and the community to keep them updated on the project.

“When completed some of the benefits will include improved water quality and water management efficiency, as well as reduced chemical and power use. The lifecycle of the asset is expected to increase by at least another 30 years.”

Work is scheduled to start in April 2020, following the summer season, and continue until December 2020.
