Local artists Jesse Stevens and Dean Petersen will bring a creative, interactive feel to this year’s Federation University Road National Championships, with re-purposed musical bikes powered by people.

The creative duo, who work under the name Cake Industries, were commissioned by the City of Ballarat to create some bike art for the 2020 event.

“To be honest, we were pretty excited to explore the fusion of man and machine which is what cycling is all about - performance and the power of humans,” said Jesse.

The 4.5metre wide triangular art installation involves three heavily modified bikes connected to a selection of pulleys and mechanisms, where the pedal action creates the movement of human body parts and a series of twisted strange mechanisms linked to technology that produces a sound experience.

“Some people will be happy to jump on and have a quick pedal, while others will definitely enjoy the challenge of creating those sounds together,” he said.

This quirky, interactive installation will be positioned in Sturt Street on Friday, 10 January before being moved to Buninyong as part of the weekend attractions.

The bike art interactive sculpture is suitable for all ages from 5 years up.
