The Member for Albury, Justin Clancy, congratulated council on reaching the important milestone, which will see approximately 1km of streetscape upgraded along Wagga Road, between Kaylock Road and Barlow Street.
“The upgrades are an important step in supporting Lavington business by bringing customers back to the area,” Mr Clancy said.
“Parking will be improved and it will be easier for pedestrians to cross the road to visit shops and businesses, while landscaping and tree planting will improve the area’s appearance.
“I’m delighted the NSW Liberals and Nationals in Government are supporting this important project which complements previous stage one works on Wagga Road.”
Stage two includes a central median strip with newly planted trees, improved crossing points, the replacement of existing footpaths and kerbing, upgraded parking and resealing of the road.
AlburyCity is delivering the project, with the NSW Government contributing $2 million under the Regional Growth Fund’s Growing Local Economies program, established under Restart NSW. Albury City Council is contributing $2.5 million.
AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack thanked the NSW Government for its support.
“This latest step in the revitalisation of Wagga Road will make a big difference to the retail sector in Lavington by making it safer, more efficient and shopper-friendly,” he said.
“By working with the government, we’re delivering on our plans to breathe new life into Lavington’s CBD by supporting existing businesses and hopefully attracting new operators to the area.”
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the upgrades to Wagga Road were another example of the NSW Liberals and Nationals in Government’s commitment to regional NSW.
“We want to encourage people to ‘buy local’ and support the businesses of Lavington, and these works will make it easier and more enjoyable for people to stop and shop, bringing customers back to the CBD,” Mr Barilaro said.
“This will mean more business investment and more jobs in the local area, which is exactly what the Growing Local Economies program is all about – supporting the development of enabling infrastructure that help grown our regional economies.”
