Leading the way in waste reduction

Our community’s efforts to lead the way in waste reduction have been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony in Sydney.

AlburyCity was this week named the winner of an Excellence in Environment Award for achieving a significant reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The award recognises the wider community’s success in diverting many tonnes of recyclable goods away from landfill, creating new opportunities to turn potential waste into valuable products and significantly easing pressure on the city’s landfill site.

AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack thanked the community for its effort.

“Householders and business owners have really embraced the message of reduce, re-use and recycle, and as a result we’re leading the way in waste management practices,” he said.

“Through our partnership with Halve Waste, our community is well on the way to reaching our target of reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill by 50 per cent and it’s great to have that success recognised in this important award.”

The Halve Waste initiative involves the Albury, Wodonga, Greater Hume, Indigo, Federation and Towong council areas.

“It really is a region-wide effort and everyone involved should be congratulated for making such a major difference in the way we manage our waste disposal and recycling,” Cr Mack said.
