A new roundabout will be constructed next month to improve traffic safety at an intersection on the University of New England’s (UNE) Armidale campus.
A number of narrowly-averted accidents have been reported at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Trevenna Road in recent years, prompting UNE and Council representatives to investigate options to make the intersection safer.
Traffic will be diverted from the intersection during the roundabout’s construction, from 3 February to 31 March. An adjacent slip lane will be converted to two-way traffic, while UNE is providing detours and alternate access to its administration building during this period.
Council secured $592,274 in funding from the Australian Government Blackspot Program, administered by Roads & Maritime Services, to design and construct the single-lane roundabout.
An independent road safety audit and close liaison with UNE helped ensure the new roundabout design will also bring improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work will include new kerb and guttering, storm water pits and pipes, a centre island, relocation of the footpath and pedestrian crossing and installing new street lights.
In addition, an elm tree in poor health will be removed.
