Council has backed a push to see the Darling River officially recognised by its traditional name of "Baaka".
The Barkindji Native Title Group Aboriginal Corporation has made an application to the Geographical Names Board which would see the river have dual names - Darling River and Baaka.
Mayor Darriea Turley AM sought Council support for the change via a Mayoral Minute at last night's Extraordinary Meeting, and the motion was passed.
Mayor Turley said dual naming was another step in the right direction to save the embattled river.
"The Darling River has been known as the Baaka by Barkindji people for thousands of years, and is critical for the Indigenous communities that live along it," said Mayor Turley.
"We have to do all we can as a Council and as a community to show that the river is culturally significant and must be respected and rehabilitated.
"I am proud that Councillors have backed this motion, and encourage local groups and individuals to voice their support as well."
Locals can show their support by making a submission before 28 January 2020 at: https://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/place_naming/current_proposals/naming_proposal?id=6030
